Biography

I have a degree in computer science from Beijing University of Posts and Telecommunication, and MSc and PhD in computer science from the School of Computing and Centre for Cognitive Science and Cognitive Systems at University of Kent. I previously worked in Institute of Psychiatry, King's College London and MRC Cognition and Brain Sciences Unit, Cambridge. My research interests include language comprehension, the cognitive and affective control, human-computer interaction and cognitive neuropsychiatry. I develop and apply several cutting-edge technologies such as real-time functional MRI, multivariate pattern analysis for MEG/EEG (in particular, Spatiotemporal Searchlight RSA, c.f. Su et al., PRNI 2012), and computational modelling in systems and cognitive neuroscience.

Significant clusters showing brain areas that carry information about cohort competition over space and time.

Other Research Interests

Modelling Cognitive and Affective Control I model how task directed cognitive control is supported by implicational and propositional subsystems (Barnard, 1999) and how it interacts with an affective body-state subsystem, which relates to long-term goals, instincts, motivations, needs, values and preferences. The model also predicts the pattern of conscious perception during the Attentional Blink task (Raymond et al., 1992) and the changes of awareness when either affective or non-affective task irrelevant processing occurs. This provides a specific system-level account of the dynamic interaction between cognitive and affective control, and proposing a general cognitive architecture based on parallel distributed systems derived from theoretical computer science (Su et al., 2011).

Brain Computer Interfaces and Their Applications Recent developments in functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) and computational methods allow very rapid data transfer and analysis within a few seconds of data collection. Such (near) "real time" fMRI (rt-fMRI) provides a novel brain-computer interface (BCI) which can be used for neurofeedback. This nonpharmacological therapy has already been shown to have clinical promise (DeCharms, 2008). Studies from healthy controls suggest the right anterior insula (RAI) is amenable to regulation (Caria, 2007; Lawrence and Su et al., 2013). This region is implicated in affective processing (Craig, 2009), and is hypoactive in some psychiatric conditions (Phillips et al., 2001).
